It may seem like to some of you that the presence of chlorine and chloramine in drinking water is a blessing, and I guess in many ways it is.

There is no more effective way to eliminate bacteria and parasites from our water supply, and prevent the spread of potentially deadly waterborne diseases.

It appears as though until we are able to come up with an alternative to introducing chemicals into the water this type of disinfection is here to stay.

While it is true that chemical disinfection does save lives, there is a dark side to the chemicals we depend on for keeping us free of disease.

The truth is that the use of these disinfecting agents has been linked to the steady rise in the rate of cancer. 10 million people worldwide will be diagnosed with some form of cancer this year, and 5 million of them live in industrialized nations that use chemical disinfection to eliminate parasites and bacteria from their water.

There was a time when just 1 in 50 people were likely to develop cancer during the course of their lifetime, and now the chances are estimated to be 1 in every 2.5 of us.

The reason that many experts blame the presence of chlorine and chloramine in drinking water is that this astronomical rise did not begin until just a few short years after chemical disinfection became a popular practice.

Since chlorine disinfection is the primary process that is followed, the majority of the studies done on cancer development and the disinfection process have revolved around this agent.

Chlorine gets a great deal of the blame for the rise in cancer, while the affect that chloramine has on the cancer rate is largely muted. Some experts say that while still dangerous, chloramine is safer due to a lower production of trihalomethanes than what you get with chlorine.

They say that because chloramine in drinking water only produces about one-third of the carcinogenic trihalomethanes compared to the production rate from chlorine, you have a better chance of staying healthy.

This view may actually be skewed by not taking into consideration that chloramine does not easily dissipate the way that chlorine does. You may be getting exposed to a much higher number of trihalomethanes than previously believed.

Only time and continued study will tell whether or not chloramine in drinking water is safer than chlorine, but so long as there is some risk involved does it really matter?

You need to take no chances when it comes to your own health, and the health of your family members.

The smartest thing you can do is install a tap water purification system featuring activated granular carbon, ion exchange, and sub micron filtration.

You might also think about showerhead filters as well, because trihalomethanes can survive in the air in your home for quite a while after being released through your showerhead.

Both chlorine and chloramine in drinking water pose a very serious threat, and you have to do all that you can to safeguard your home.
